Lab tests don't lie and they always tell a story. We pick things up in a lab test that doctors don't.

medical history

Where you have come from can tell us many things.

It’s important to get to the root cause of insomnia. It can really make a world of difference. Just because two people have symptoms of insomnia doesn’t mean they have the same causes. Check what happens in your first consultation.

Some Common Causes Of Insomnia

Through assessment of these underlying causes and triggers of dysfunction, the Functional Medicine practitioner is able to understand how key processes are affected. These are the body’s processes that keep you alive. Some occur at the cellular level and involve how cells function, repair, and maintain themselves. These processes are related to larger functions, such as:

Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century.

By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

Now … Overcoming Insomnia

About Insomnia

The importance of quality sleep for the brain and body cannot be overstated. For optimal brain function, emotional well-being, and physical health, adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, teens need 8-10 hours, and younger children need even more. A single sleepless night can lead to fatigue, anxiety, bad moods, and brain fog. People who suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders (such as sleep apnea) may also struggle with anxiety, depression, addictions, memory problems, dementia, pain, obesity, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, hyperactivity, low sex drive, gastrointestinal problems, and more.

Who Is Affected By Sleep Disorder ?

Common signs of sleep disorders

Nearly one-third of us suffer from short-term bouts of insomnia, the most common sleep disorder. And chronic insomnia affects approximately 1 in 10 people. The rates are even higher among people with psychiatric disorders. In fact, over 50% of the time, insomnia is tied to stress, anxiety, or depression. Research shows that about 75% of people with depression also have insomnia. From 69 to 99% of people with bipolar disorder experience insomnia or feel a reduced need for sleep during manic episodes. Over half of the people with anxiety have trouble sleeping. And children with ADHD are more likely to experience sleep disorders than kids without the condition.

Diseases Associated With Sleep Disorders

Sleep deprived brains work differently

Emerging research shows that during sleep, your brain cleans or washes itself by eliminating cellular debris and toxins that build up during the day (basically taking out the neural trash). This trash includes the beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. During sleep, the brain also consolidates learning and memory, and it prepares for the following day. The brain processes that occur during sleep are also important for the health of your immune system, appetite control, and neurotransmitter production. A chronic lack of sleep means your brain doesn’t perform these important functions at optimal levels.

Special Topic

How Insomnia Affects Your Brain

Your brain is the single most important thing in your life because it has the biggest influence on how you think, feel, act and perform. Not only is your brain the organ of physical and mental wellness, it is also the organ of personality and achievement. Consequently when your brain works right, you work right.

But what happens when the brain does not get the sleep it requires ?

brain inflammation

Brain fog, low brain endurance, variable mental processing speeds, poor focus and concentration

As the brain struggles to balance itself through lack of sleep, people become more prone to food cravings

Mental Health Concerns

Brain inflammation is a forerunner to the development of mental health issues including depression, anxiety states, bipolar, OCD, anger and irritability

As people struggle to get sleep they need they resort to drugs both pharmaceutical and recreational. Withdrawing from these drugs requires special considerations and support

Diabetes is a national epidemic in the UK and just about every westernised country in the world.

heart disease

Heart and circulatory disorders are still the no.1 killer in western society.

Brain inflammation can destroy brain tissue just as chronic joint inflammation can destroy joint tissue, leading to joint deformity, stiffness, and pain. If your brain is not working well, you may be suffering from brain inflammation. This is serious because brain inflammation is associated with a significant risk for various degenerative brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

What Is The Philosophy of Functional Medicine ?

Functional Medicine differs greatly from mainstream medicine because it seeks to address the underlying causes of many modern day health concerns.
